- May 28 Is International Menstrual Equity Awareness Day

May 28th has been designated as International Menstrual Hygiene Day since 2014, in accordance with New Jersey State Resolution Number 44. This day holds significant importance as it promotes menstrual equity and addresses the challenges girls, women, and transgenders face in accessing menstrual hygiene products.

In observance of Menstrual Equity Day, the National Council of Negro Women, Inc. will organize a Menstrual Product Drive in various locations in New Jersey, from May 22nd to May 28th. The products obtained from this drive will be distributed to schools and shelters across New Jersey, ensuring that those in need have access to essential menstrual supplies.

Menstruation is a natural biological function that necessitates the use of supplies. These supplies should not be considered luxury items and should easily be accessible to all individuals. Unfortunately, due to financial constraints, obtaining monthly menstrual products can be a hardship for some. This struggle is termed "Period Poverty." Period poverty can lead to loss of wages and missed educational opportunities, further exacerbating their already impoverished state.

Menstrual Equity Day is a day to recognize and advocate for adequate menstrual supplies for those in need. Additionally, it serves as a day of awareness to eliminate the stigma surrounding menstruation. It is essential to create an environment where individuals who menstruate can obtain menstrual products in a dignified and affordable manner.

We encourage everyone to support Menstrual Equity Day by participating in the Menstrual Product Drive or raising awareness about this issue. By working together, we can ensure that all individuals have access to the necessary menstrual hygiene products they require. Let us stand united to eliminate barriers, address menstrual inequity, and support those in need.
